Nothe Fort. viewed from below, Weymouth
The popular Nothe fort has plenty to keep the family interested and entertained. There are some lovely gardens here, as well as the fort. The site of the fort has been used since the mid 16th century as a defence against invasion, since this area gives a good view of Weymouth Bay and harbour on one side and Portland Harbour on the other. There have been many different fort buildings here over the past five hundred years or so. This one was built in the Victorian era by the Royal Engineers and inmates of Portland Prison, after the original contractor, who had laid the foundations, ceased to trade.

The fort is made of Portland stone, granite and brick and is on three levels in the shape of a horse shoe. It was used as a fort up until 1956, when Weymouth and Portland Borough Council took over. The Weymouth Civic Society have now turned it into a visitor attraction with displays of Weymouth's coastal defence, underwater weapons and World War II.
