Weymouth UK: Hope Square, Weymouth
 Hope Square is named after the "ope" or cove which once ran back into what is now Hope Square. The Square area used to be called "Ope Cove". The ope was filled in 1782 across the mouth of the inlet, but prior to this, the inlet ran right up to where the Red Lion Pub stands today. Three streets lead off Hope Square: Hope Street (which used to have houses on both sides, right up to the water's edge), Cove Street and Trinity Street. You can see Brewers Quay in this shot. The building on the right of this, known as Pilgrim House was the first community centre in the area.This whole area was cleaned up a few years ago and made into an attractive tourist area, popular with the town's many visitors. Brewer's Quay has been redeveloped into an award winning family attraction, with a maze of cobbled streets and courtyards. It now has its own pub and also some small, individual crafts and specialist shops, recreated in the style of Victorian times. MORE... |
