Having been ransacked by the French, and fought over in the Civil War, the harbour has seen many wars including during Napoleonic times, and World War II when 516,000 US troops left our ports for the D-Day invasion in Normandy.

Development of both the Inner and Outer Harbour has taken place since the war to provide tourist leisure facilities including a shower block in the office at 13 Custom House Quay. Initially moorings were all of the chain and sinker type but in 1970 the first set of pontoons was installed with access from Westwey Road. These gave sterling service until being replaced with modern finger berthing in two phases during 1994 - 6. The second set of pontoons was installed in 1973 to an improved design and with access from North Quay. Pontoons were also provided in the Cove during the 1980s and this type of berthing has been widely extended on the quays during 1996. Electrical and fresh water points have also been added on the quays in recent years and extended water provision made on the pontoons during 1996.

Weymouth is also proud of its record as being the only port in the world to have hosted the start of the Cutty Sark Tall Ships race on three separate occasions. We have been the start port in 1983, 1987 and most recently in 1994. We have also become one of the ports to host the start/finish legs of the international biennial Starmanche yacht race running from France to Ireland via Weymouth and back to France with legs successfully hosted in 1994 and 1996.

Commercial fishing remains a key activity within the port and in 1994 a new fish landing quay was constructed to enable the port to comply with EC regulations governing the landing of fish for human consumption. Electrical plug-in sockets have now also been added so that modern fish lorries do not need to run their engines for power during waiting/loading thus cutting down noise problems from the refrigeration generators. With the increased catches being processed within Port limits by the winter Klondyker fish factory fleet, Weymouth is now the Port with the largest annual fish tonnage in England and the third largest in the UK.

The port therefore has a recorded history of use dating back circa 1900 years to the Romans and we look forward to being able to serve you for many more years to come.
